Length: 6,200 yards Par: 70 Links Course
Conceived by some of the game’s greatest figures, the links at Arbroath justifiably earns its notable position in the history of golf.
First designed to the exacting standards of four-time Open champion Old Tom Morris in 1877, it wasn’t until the purchase of additional land 30 years later that Willie Fernie of Troon was employed to redesign the layout.
The final touches were made when the great James Braid cast his eye over the bunkering, with little changed since his last visit.
As such, the course represents a time-honoured test of links golf, where the safety of wide-open fairways is offset by undulating greens well protected by testing bunkers.
Especially tricky is ‘Dowrie’, Arbroath’s signature hole. Coming at the 13th, it’s a par-4 of 412 yards with the railway line down the right and a burn, which transects the fairway, 120 yards from the green. This means a tricky tee shot and a daunting second must be overcome to walk off with par.
In the clubhouse, visitors are warmly welcomed to take advantage of the extensive facilities, ensuring societies will be well looked after during any outing to Arbroath.
