Without doubt one of the most esteemed clubs in the whole of the United Kingdom, Moortown Golf Club was founded in 1909 and originally designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie of Augusta National fame.
As the name would suggest, Mackenzie conceived a thoroughly enjoyable and immaculately presented course set in 175 acres of idyllic woodland and moorland.
Over the years, Moortown has played host to a variety of prestigious professional and national tournaments, not least the 1929 Ryder Cup, the second official match between GB&I and America, which saw GB&I record their first-ever win in the historic event.
Accuracy rather than length is pivotal to scoring well, as the seemingly wide fairways often taper inward around landing areas, allowing thick rough to punish any errant shot.
Watch out for the tenth hole, in particular. A fantastic par-3, it is MacKenzie’s signature hole and features a dry stonewall behind the green.
Off the course, the club extends a warm welcome to all visitors in its well-furnished clubhouse.
Truly, visit Moortown once and it won’t be long before you visit again.
