Course Description

Golf has been played at Carnalea for more than 100 years and became Ireland’s first municipal golf club in 1927.

Its beautiful seaside setting has superb views over Belfast Lough and the Antrim Hills beyond. Long on history and challenges, this 18-hole course, divided into two loops of nine by the Bangor to Belfast rail line, covering an area of approximately 88 acres.

Carnalea has always been proud of its full and varied social calendar, with the par-69 layout boasting stunning panoramic sea views from the Ailsa Craig Suite.

The course’s signature hole is the ninth, a 141-yard par-3 named ‘Plateau’. Stand back and admire the views on the tee box before composing yourself and attempt a ‘green or bust’ tee shot at this hole just below the clubhouse.

If you’re heading for a good score before playing the 18th, it’s vital you maintain your concentration right until the end. The final hole is the longest par-4 on the course has a blind tee shot, with a drive to the right of the fairway providing the best chance of reaching the green in two. The approach shot with the clubhouse in sight, is to a shallow green, with a severe left to right slope. Most golfers are happy to walk off with a five.
