Course Description

The most easterly 18-hole course in Ireland, Kirkistown Castle in County Down was founded as a nine-hole course in 1902 before being extended to its current 18-hole layout in 1929.

There are a couple of large depressions on the opening holes which come from World War Two. Sand and gravel was excavated from the front of the first tee and behind the third green for the construction of the Kirkistown and Ballyhalbert airfields and that is how the two landforms came about.

The course measures 6,167 yards in length and is arranged in two loops of nine with a par of 69. Between the opening and closing par-5s, there are five par-3s and 11 par-4s – with many of the par-4s very strong holes measuring in excess of 400 yards.

The signature hole is the 438-yard par-4 tenth, named ‘Long Reach’, where the green is raised more than 30ft about fairway level and is very hard to hold with a long approach shot. If you can manage are par here, you’ll be doing very well indeed.

Whether member or guest, everyone is most welcome to come and experience the wonderful golf on offer at Kirkistown Castle.
