Course Description

Royal Belfast is one of only five clubs in Ireland to have the ‘Royal’ prefix in their name and was one of nine clubs that founded the Golf Union of Ireland in 1891.

In 1925, some 43 years after the club was established, it moved to its present location – a 140-acre site on the south shore of Belfast Lough where the views across the water to the Antrim Hills are pretty special.

The course was designed by none other than Harry Colt, one of the leading course architects of his day and, assisted by W. A. Murray, the layout is routed over beautiful rolling parkland.

Trees, lush fairways, gentle elevation changes and thoughtful bunkering combine to make the course a ‘must-play’, with holes nine to 11 located right along the shoreline.

In terms of modern day courses that are being constructed today, Royal Belfast is relatively short measuring a fraction over 6,000 yards from the whites. However, you’d be foolish to presume a good score is a given.

A pair of tough, long par-4s open and close the front nine, while two of the final three holes are testing par-5s. As such, any net score approaching the standard scratch of one more than the par total of 70 will be hard fought for.
