Though the Scottish Borders is a relatively unheralded golfing region, the grandeur of The Roxburghe in Kelso is anything but undiscovered.
Set in over 200 acres of gently undulating hills, The Roxburghe was conceived by the Duke of Roxburghe, who commissioned world-renowned golf architect Dave Thomas to create the Borders’ first championship golf course.
Bearing all the hallmarks of a Thomas design, with generous rolling greens and challenging bunkers, the par-72, 6,925-yard layout is woven mature woodland alongside the tranquil River Teviot.
A former home of the Scottish Seniors Open, this parkland delight presents as true a test of golf as there is, set amidst simply wonderful surroundings.
The quality of the test that awaits at The Roxburghe was further underlined when the tenth hole was included in the ‘Ultimate Scottish Golf Course’ by bunkered golf magazine. However, trumping even that, is the signature 14th hole, named ‘Viaduct’, where you start from an elevated tee commanding superb views over the River Teviot that hugs the left of the fairway with an imposing viaduct across the horizon.
