Course Description

Regarded as the world’s oldest 18-hole golf course from inception and the fourth oldest course in the world, Forfar was laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1871 and, for more than 50 years, it remained unchanged until James Braid’s edits in 1926.

Since then, though, the course has been virtually untouched.

Despite being more than ten miles from the Angus coast, Forfar displays many links-like undulations that often leaves visitors mystified, but there are some cracking holes on the par-69 layout which comfortably sits inside Scotland’s top 100.

The 412-yard 15th hole, called ‘Braid’s Best’, is the signature hole. A dogleg right, it favours a fade off the tee, with three bunkers protecting the front of a raised green, while a steep slope to the left punishes pulled approaches.

It’s the unique blend of a links-like surface, parkland avenue and heathland heather and gorse that makes Forfar so appealing. The holes are carved through 80 acres and each fairway is played largely separate of the others.

Length off the tee is not paramount here as ten of the 13 par-4's are less than 400 yards. But don’t let that make you think Forfar will be a straight-forward test, as it is far from it.
