Course Description

Founded in 1922, High Post Golf Club boasts one of the best courses in the south-west of England.

With stunning views of Salisbury Plain, the downland course – designed by five-time Open champion J.H. Taylor in collaboration with Fred Hawtree – is named after the site of an ancient gallows-pole.

Although the course measures a modest 6,305 yards from the tips, High Post presents an excellent challenge. With only two par-5s on the card – at the second and sixth holes – and four par-3s, the par is set at 70. The four par-3s all feature well-bunkered greens and the longest of these short holes – the 183-yard 17th – has the added difficulty of playing to a semi-blind putting surface.

Overall, the easy-walking course is characterised by its undulating well-bunkered fairways, deep well-disguised grass hollows, all-year round playability and excellent turfs.

The legendary golfer and ‘Voice of Golf’, Peter Alliss, is said to be a huge fan of High Post. His favourite hole – and one that is said to have made his 18-hole dream course – is the 384-yard ninth.

This is a handsome par-4 that sets off with a downhill drive to a fairway, which then bends slightly right towards a back-to-front sloping green.

Societies are most welcome at High Post, with packages able to be tailored to meet your exact requirements.
